Wheat grassroots (hydroponics)

I. Material

IngredientAmount
Wheat (barley) seeds75g
WaterUnlimited

Notes: The ingredients mentioned above are used for covering a 10cm*20cm space. The ingredients increase proportionally according to the required dimension.

Tools: Flat container, grid plate, thin cloth/thin paper, water spray bottle, 3D printed pattern (optional)

II. Procedure

1. Wash and soak the seeds in cold water for 10-12 hours.

*Molded, broken, and deflated seeds should be picked out, otherwise the final result is likely to be contaminated.

2. Spread the seeds on the grid plate, the seeds should be spread evenly in one layer. Pour water into the flat plate. Layer the grid plate onto the flat plate. (Note: the water should not be touching the seeds.)

*If using a 3D printed pattern, please place the 3D model under the grid plate.

3. Cover the seeds with a piece of thin cloth (or paper). Remove it when the sprout is about 1-2 cm.

4. Change the water on the flat plate every day, and spray water on the cloth/paper to keep it moist. If the cloth/paper is removed, then spray the grass at least once a day.

5. Once the roots are dense enough as required (usually the grass will be about 8-10 cm tall at this point), take the grid plate out. Place the grid plate upside down. Remove excess seeds, and let the roots dry by air or with the oven.

6. When the roots are dried, cut off the grass and the remaining seeds from the other side of the grid plate. Gently remove the root pattern from the grid plate.
